Quick answer

First ask what is threatened

  1. Is the King currently attacked? Classify a check.
  2. If not, is there a threat of a checking sequence that mates? Examine a mating threat.
  3. Does the same move also chase material? Read the relevant Chapter 5 case before ruling.
  4. Compare both sides' full repeating sequences.

Counter-mating threats

Chapter 5 §5 explains the case where each player resolves a mating threat while creating one. If neither changes the permitted sequence, the ruling is a draw. The printed Diagram 10 line has an apparent mismatch with its prose; this page explains the section without inventing a corrected diagram.

FAQ

Does every dangerous attack count as a mating threat?

No. Article 19.2 concerns a threat leading to checkmate through check or a series of checks. A vague positional advantage is not enough.
