ChessPlayX offers 19 Xiangqi (Chinese chess) appearance sets, including Default and coordinated boards and pieces in wood, stone, jade and ornamental styles. To change your skin, open Game settings → Board and choose a preview. Your selection changes how the board and pieces look in your current browser; the rules stay the same.

Guests and Free accounts can use Default, Traditional wood and Stone; the other 16 designs belong to the Premium collection.

For some players, a warm wooden board and familiar characters are enough to invite another game. Others enjoy an emerald playing surface, with the opening ranks lined up along golden grid lines. The same central-cannon opening can feel quite different against a new backdrop.

Here, a “skin” or “board template” means the appearance of the board and pieces. Choose for pleasure as well as readability: a set should make you want to play while letting you follow the position comfortably.

Wood and stone: a familiar place to play

Traditional wood pairs a warm golden surface with round pieces and familiar red and black characters. Its grid stands out clearly, making it a useful starting point if you enjoy a conventional look. Classic wood brings deeper brown tones and a more rustic grain. Terracotta stays in the warm palette while changing the frame and surface treatment.

For a light playing surface with a strong border, compare Stone and Minimal stone. Stone has a more ornate frame; Minimal stone places a quieter light surface inside a dark surround. They share a piece style, so you can change the board's character without relearning its piece faces.

Default is also part of the catalogue. Select it whenever you want to return to the original appearance.

Jade boards: different shades, different moods

Emerald jade combines a rich green surface with golden grid lines. Deep jade goes darker, with a decorative frame that gives the board a more subdued atmosphere. Both offer a distinctive change from familiar wooden colours.

For a lighter look, Gilded jade uses a pale green surface and fine edging. Carved jade combines an ornamental border with translucent-looking aqua pieces. Jade tiger pairs a light jade palette with imagery around the frame. Choosing between them is also about how clearly the pieces stand apart from the surface.

Dragons, phoenixes and landscapes

If you enjoy a board with an expressive frame, Golden dragon offers prominent dragon motifs and gold trim. Phoenix leans into red, gold and softer decorative curves. Battle generals has a bolder atmosphere and amber-coloured pieces.

Great Wall combines a detailed surround with icy blue pieces. Heavenly storm stands out through pale purple pieces, while Imperial palace brings a vivid red-and-gold frame and light-coloured pieces. These are interesting choices once you are comfortable recognising the characters across different treatments.

For a dark Xiangqi board, Black and gold places golden lines over an almost black playing surface. Mountains and rivers introduces landscape decoration around the frame and aqua-coloured pieces. One is dark and sharply defined; the other adds scenery to enjoy before the first move.

Left to right: Golden dragon, Black and gold, Mountains and rivers. Golden dragon and Black and gold share a piece style, yet their backgrounds give them very different appearances. Nineteen sets does not mean nineteen entirely separate piece designs: some reuse pieces in a different board pairing.

Choosing a readable Xiangqi board on a phone

On a small screen, start by checking the piece characters at actual playing size. A beautiful frame in a thumbnail is only part of the choice. Look at the rook, cannon and horse, distinguish the two armies and inspect the intersections next to crowded pieces.

Scroll the table sideways to compare all columns.

Learning Chinese-character piecesDefault, Traditional woodCan you identify each piece without zooming in?
A light surface and visible gridMinimal stone, Gilded jadeDo the characters and piece edges stand apart from the background?
A dark boardBlack and gold, Deep jadeCan you distinguish both armies at your normal screen brightness?
A more decorative frameGolden dragon, Phoenix, Mountains and riversCan you still follow rook lines and cannon screens quickly?

These are starting points, not a ranking of the best skins. Readability depends on your display, lighting and familiarity with the characters. A dark background is not automatically the best fit for everyone.

Try a few moves in Xiangqi practice against AI, then scan the position again. If recognising the pieces takes extra effort, try another set. If the characters themselves are unfamiliar, the guide to the Xiangqi board and seven piece types is more useful than repeatedly changing themes.

How to change your Xiangqi board and pieces

  1. Open Xiangqi on ChessPlayX and enter a game.
  2. Open Game settings → Board. The Sound and Game tabs keep the other controls separate.
  3. Select the preview you like. Its board and pieces come as a coordinated set.
  4. Wait for the artwork to load and the In use checkmark to move to your selection, then close settings and continue playing.
  5. To return to the original appearance, reopen the picker and choose Default.

You can also open Board set from the record toolbar. Your choice is saved in this browser; Premium designs apply only while the current account has a valid paid plan. Signing out or losing access restores a free design.

For a timed game, choose your preferred appearance before starting. Changing a skin does not pause the game clock.

Your appearance, the same position

A skin does not add moves, remove a cannon's need for a screen, let a horse ignore a blocked leg or award ranking points. The river, palaces and piece movement still follow the Xiangqi rules. You are choosing how to view the game.

Your selection does not make your opponent use the same set. You might see jade while the other player prefers wood: appearance is a personal viewing preference rather than a room condition.

The choice is saved in the current browser's data on the device you are using. Switching devices or browsers, or clearing site data, can mean choosing again. Signing in does not automatically synchronise the skin across devices.

Frequently asked questions

Are these Xiangqi skins free to choose?

Default, Traditional wood and Stone are free for guests and Free accounts. The other 16 designs unlock with a valid paid plan. Designs remain available for the paid term even after the 3D plays run out, and changing a design does not spend a play. Expired or revoked plans lock Premium designs again.

Do I need to download a skin pack or install an app?

No separate skin download or extra app is needed. Select the set inside ChessPlayX and your browser loads its board and piece images. The first load may take a moment, depending on your connection.

Which piece set should a beginner try first?

Try Default or Traditional wood, then check that you can read the characters on both armies clearly. This is a starting suggestion, not a rule. Learning to recognise the general, advisors, elephants, rooks, cannons, horses and soldiers remains the important step.

Is there a dark Xiangqi board for phones?

Try Black and gold or Deep jade in the same appearance picker. Check them on your phone at your usual brightness. You should be able to distinguish piece characters, both armies and grid lines, as well as enjoy the background colour.

Can I combine any board with any piece style?

The current picker applies predefined board-and-piece pairings. You select a complete set; there is no separate control for freely mixing boards and pieces. Some sets share a piece style, including Golden dragon and Black and gold.

Why is my chosen skin missing on another device?

The preference is saved in the browser and device where you selected it. It does not automatically follow your account to another device. Open Board set there and choose again. Clearing site data can also remove a saved preference.

Will changing skins during a game reset the position?

Changing the board set changes its appearance, without resetting the pieces or starting a new game. If you are interacting with a piece, the new artwork may wait for that interaction to finish. The game clock is not paused by a skin change.

What if I select a set and the board does not change?

Check the status beneath the catalogue. The set may still be loading or waiting for the current interaction to finish. If loading fails, the previous set remains visible. Check your connection and choose Retry, or select another set.

Pick a set and try a real position

Start with Traditional wood for a familiar look, Emerald jade for a change of colour, then Black and gold to compare a dark surface. The most ornate set is not necessarily your favourite. Look for the one that makes you enjoy sitting down and following the game.

Open Xiangqi and choose your board set. To learn more about the characters and their moves, visit the beginner's Xiangqi guide or the WXF rules learning hub.

Names, availability and images were checked against ChessPlayX's appearance catalogue on 28 September 2026. The comparisons use actual previews in the same starting position, so you can compare the playing surface, piece faces and decorative frame.
