What can you play in 3D on ChessPlayX?

ChessPlayX offers 3D Chess, Xiangqi and Go in your browser. The boards and pieces have depth, and you can rotate or zoom the view. Each game keeps its usual rules on ChessPlayX. You can play against AI, join an online game or take turns with someone on the same device.

Open 3D Chess or compare the 2D and 3D views.

A familiar board from a different angle

The 3D view shows the board's surface, its edges and the shape of each piece. Rotating the board changes your viewpoint, much like leaning over a physical set.

The Camera menu offers Perspective, From above and Inclined views. Drag to rotate, use the mouse wheel or pinch with two fingers to zoom, and choose Reset view if you lose a comfortable angle. Xiangqi also has a Drag to rotate the board switch.

You can flip the board, turn sound on or off and review earlier moves within the game you have open. These controls change how you follow the game, not how pieces move or how the result is decided.

3D Chess: the same 8 × 8 board

3D Chess on ChessPlayX uses the familiar 8 × 8 board, with distinct king, queen, rook, bishop, knight and pawn models. It is regular chess shown in three dimensions, rather than a variant played across several board levels.

On your turn, select a piece and then a destination. The board marks legal destinations and animates pieces moving to their new squares. Pawn promotion still lets you choose a piece, just as in the 2D view.

If nearby pieces obscure one another, try the overhead view or zoom out a little. You can play 3D Chess against AI before inviting a friend. The chess rules guide explains piece movement and special moves.

3D Xiangqi: character discs or sculpted pieces

3D Xiangqi keeps the 9 × 10 intersection board, river and general's palace. You can use round pieces bearing Chinese characters or sculpted sets, including carved jade and white-and-black marble styles.

In Settings, the Board and Pieces tabs let you choose the board and pieces separately. Keep familiar character discs while trying a wood or jade board, or explore a sculpted set. Choose a style that makes chariots, cannons and horses easy for you to recognise at the size you actually play.

The appearance does not change the rules: a horse can still be blocked, and a cannon still needs exactly one intervening piece to capture. Select a piece to see its legal destinations. Read the Xiangqi guide or try 3D Xiangqi against AI.

3D Go: place a stone on an intersection

3D Go shows rounded black and white stones on a grid. Tap or click a legal intersection to place a stone; a new stone makes a short movement as it appears on the board.

ChessPlayX supports 9 × 9, 13 × 13 and 19 × 19 boards. If you are learning, a 9 × 9 board gives you a smaller space in which to follow groups. The cover image shows the empty 19 × 19 preview board.

Try the overhead view when you need to inspect neighbouring intersections. Passing, marking dead groups and confirming the score follow ChessPlayX's existing Go flow. Read the Go rules used on the site, or play 3D Go against AI.

How do 2D and 3D differ?

2D and 3D are two views of the same game. Choose the one that suits how you read a position; 3D is an option, not a required upgrade.

Where the 2D / 3D selector appears in an active game, you can switch views and continue that game. For same-device games or AI games stored locally, use the browser where the game was saved. Changing the view does not pause a running clock.

Start a 3D game

  1. Open 3D Chess, 3D Xiangqi or 3D Go. Looking at the preview does not use a play.
  2. Choose online play, AI or the friend option. The friend option creates a private room that you can share by link.
  3. Set the clock, AI level or Go board size available for the mode you selected.
  4. Use the AI play or room creation button to enter your game. Sign in when prompted, then select a piece and its destination; in Go, select an intersection.

If you are sitting together, open a same-device board directly: Chess, Xiangqi or Go. 3D still needs a connection to check the account's allowance, even when both players share one device.

Free plays and 3D plans

A Free account has 10 3D plays, shared across the three games. The allowance refills to a maximum of 10 every five hours; unused plays do not accumulate. Sign in to use your allowance.

A new game uses one play when you make your first move in 3D. Previewing, rotating the board or continuing the same activated game does not use another play. When your allowance runs out, you can wait for the refill, look at paid plans or continue in 2D.

The ChessPlayX plans page shows current prices, durations and allowances. 3D access and advanced AI trials are separate: buying a 3D plan does not add advanced AI plays.

How the browser displays the board

ChessPlayX uses Three.js and WebGL to draw its 3D boards in the browser. No separate app is needed. The 3D display code loads when you open a 3D board.

The site adjusts visual quality using device capabilities and can reduce rendering detail if drawing becomes slow. The board also respects reduced-motion settings. If the browser cannot render 3D, the interface falls back to a 2D board so you can keep following the game.

Touch, drag and pinch controls are available on phones. Smoothness depends on the device and browser, so try the preview on your own phone. Set a readable angle before starting a timed game.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChessPlayX have 3D Chess?

Yes. 3D Chess has an 8 × 8 board, shaped pieces, legal destination markers and adjustable views. You can play against AI, online or with someone on the same device. The rules and promotion choices remain those used for chess on ChessPlayX; this is not a multilevel chess variant.

Can I play 3D Xiangqi online?

Yes. Open 3D Xiangqi and choose online play or create a private room to invite a friend. Both players share the same game even if one uses 2D and the other uses 3D. A player making moves in 3D needs to sign in and have a valid allowance or plan.

Which board sizes does 3D Go support?

3D Go supports 9 × 9, 13 × 13 and 19 × 19 boards. Choose the size during game setup. All three use black and white stones placed on intersections. Switching to 3D does not change the board size or scoring rules of the game you are playing.

Do I need to install an app?

No separate app is required. Open ChessPlayX in your browser and choose a 3D board. The browser loads the display code and artwork it needs. You still need a connection to sign in and check your 3D allowance; same-device play does not mean the 3D mode works entirely without a network.

Can I play 3D board games on my phone?

The interface supports tapping to select or place pieces, dragging to rotate and pinching to zoom. Rendering support and smoothness depend on your phone and browser. Open a preview to check your own device first. If the browser cannot display 3D, the site has a 2D fallback.

Does 3D change the rules?

No. 3D changes the way the board and pieces look. The rules, turn order and position are shared with 2D. Chess still uses one 8 × 8 board, Xiangqi retains its river and palaces, and Go stones still sit on intersections. Use whichever view you find easier to read.

Can I switch between 2D and 3D during a game?

Yes, use the 2D / 3D selector when it appears in your active game. The link keeps the same room or locally saved game. Continuing a game already activated in 3D does not use another play. For local games, keep the same browser and its saved data if you want to resume.

Can I play all three games against AI in 3D?

Yes. Chess, Xiangqi and Go each have a route into a 3D AI game. Choose a level in that game's setup. The 3D view does not make the AI stronger. Advanced AI options, where available, have access rules and allowances separate from your 3D plays.

Is 3D play free?

Free accounts receive 10 3D plays after sign-in, refilled to a maximum of 10 every five hours without accumulating unused plays. Previews do not consume plays. When you run out, wait for a refill, view the 3D plans or continue in 2D. Current prices and benefits are listed on the plans page.

Choose a board to try

Start with a game you already know and see how the new view feels. Open 3D Chess, 3D Xiangqi or 3D Go, look around the preview, then choose how you want to play.
