Quick answer
Board result or tournament decision?
Scroll the table sideways to compare all columns.
| Situation | Result or procedure | WXF reference |
|---|---|---|
| King attacked with no legal escape | Loss by checkmate | 3.1.A.I |
| No legal move, without check | Loss by stalemate | 3.1.A.II |
| Resignation | Loss | 3.1 |
| Neither side can win | Draw under the rule's conditions | 3.2 |
| Repeating position | Classify each side's moves before ruling | 19–20 |
| Two technical fouls / four violations | Loss under the respective categories | 4.6 / 4.7 |
Why a repetition is not enough
A repeated board can contain perpetual check, perpetual chase or an allowed sequence. Those are different legal questions. In Diagram 2, Red's repeated checks are forbidden. Do not infer a draw merely because the position returns.

When the arbiter becomes involved
Record the actual sequence and the clocks. A player's claim, a rules infringement and a board with no legal move require different evidence. Consult the tournament regulations for the announced time system; do not invent an extra grace period.
FAQ
Is every repeated position a draw?
No. Articles 19–20 distinguish forbidden perpetual checks and chases from permitted repetitions. The responsibility of each side must be assessed.
