Quick answer
The claim timeline
- Preserve the record of the sequence without captures.
- Identify the claimant's checking moves: Article 8 counts only that player's first ten checks in the relevant calculation; additional checks are excluded.
- Make the claim to the arbiter. The arbiter stops both clocks and checks the record.
- Apply the verified ruling. An unsuccessful claim under Article 8 brings a technical foul and a five-minute deduction.
Why raw ply count can mislead
Suppose a record contains 100 individual moves without a capture and the claimant delivered 12 checks. Two checks lie beyond the first ten, so merely displaying “100” does not establish that the claim is valid. This is a counting illustration, not a verdict for an unseen tournament game.
Website counter and tournament procedure
The website automatically draws after 100 consecutive individual moves without a capture. Pawn moves count too. This counter does not apply Article 8’s claimant-specific check exclusion or arbiter verification. Do not use it to decide whether a formal tournament draw claim is valid.
FAQ
Does a Pawn move reset this count like a chess fifty-move rule?
Do not import that chess rule. Article 8 concerns the WXF sequence without captures. Its wording and claim/check-count procedure must be applied on their own terms.
Can I use the displayed move number to claim a draw?
The move number alone is insufficient. Captures, the claimant's checks and the recorded sequence must be verified by the arbiter under Article 8.
